Scottish singer-songwriter who put ’s “Donna, Donna” on his 1965 debut and helped carry the English Dona Dona into 1960s pop-folk.
Philips Leitch was born in Glasgow in 1946 and became the face of British folk-pop in the mid-1960s. His debut album, What’s Bin Did and What’s Bin Hid (1965), included a cover of Joan Baez’s “Donna, Donna,” which took the English Dona Dona onto the British and European circuit. Hits such as “Catch the Wind,” “Sunshine Superman,” and “Mellow Yellow” followed; the Yiddish theater (ייִדיש טעאַטער) calf was already on the record that introduced him.
