was born Frances Ethel Gumm in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, on June 10, 1922, and grew up on the vaudeville circuit with her sisters before MGM signed her as a teenager. In The Wizard of Oz (1939) she sang and ’s “Over the Rainbow”; the studio nearly cut the ballad, and it became her signature. She recorded it for the film on October 7, 1938, and again for Decca in 1939. The Library of Congress added the 1939 record to the National Recording Registry (2016 class). She died in London on January 22, 1969.
