Michalis Patrinos
active 1930s
Greek rebetiko singer who recorded Misirlou (Μισιρλού) as Mousourlou around 1930 in Athens — a slower tsifteteli that also circulated in New York.
Michalis (Mike) Patrinos recorded the eastern Mediterranean folk tune in Greece circa 1930 under the title Mousourlou, and again in New York in 1931 on Orthophonic. His take is slower than Demetriades’s 1927 New York side and is the rebetiko / tsifteteli life most often cited next to it. In Greece he is sometimes credited as composer; elsewhere ’s later copyright usually stands.
