Naftali Zvi Margolies Abulafia

recorded 1950s

Orthodox rabbi on the Lower East Side whom Harry Smith recorded singing Misirlou (Μισιρλού) in the 1950s — a Jewish room for the tune, language uncertain.

was an Orthodox rabbi in Manhattan. Ethnomusicologist and filmmaker Harry Smith recorded him singing Misirlou on the Lower East Side in the 1950s; Seth Rogovoy notes the tape as evidence that the melody had Jewish lives beyond the klezmer (כּלי־זמר) dance floor. A later write-up treats the performance as Hebrew. We do not have a verified public upload to catalog as its own song page.
