Yiddish theater (ייִדיש טעאַטער) tenor and radio star — born Shayele Rechtzeit — who sang ’s Yiddish Misirlou (Μισιρλού) on Banner around 1948.
(born Shayele Rechtzeit in Piotrków Trybunalski, 18 January 1914) immigrated to the United States in 1920 as a child prodigy and became a leading voice of the New York Yiddish stage and of WEVD radio. With his wife Miriam Kressyn, whom he married in 1943, he spent decades performing American pop in Yiddish. Their Misirlou is the documented Yiddish life of the eastern Mediterranean folk tune; Banner issued it circa 1948 with Abe Ellstein at the piano. He served as president of the Hebrew Actors’ Union and died in New York in 2002.
