Tetos Demetriades

Ottoman Greek tenor and later record man who cut the earliest known Misirlou (Μισιρλού) — Columbia, New York, July 1927.
Theodotos (“Tetos”) Demetriades was born in Constantinople (Istanbul), most sources saying 4 December 1897, and left for the United States in 1921. He recorded widely for Columbia and Victor’s Greek catalogs, then moved into production: Orthophonic, Standard Phono, and Colonial. His July 1927 Columbia side of “Misirlou” is the earliest recording of the folk tune that can be pointed at. He died in Bergen, New Jersey, in 1971.
