The London band that formed at a blues night and took its name from a record — then used its fame to put American bluesmen on American television.
came together in 1962 out of the crowd at and Cyril Davies's blues night at the Ealing Club, where Brian Jones met Mick Jagger and Keith Richards; Charlie Watts arrived from Blues Incorporated. Their name came from Muddy Waters's “Rollin' Stone,” and their early sets were largely covers of Chess Records material — Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Jimmy Reed, . That debt was not private: when ABC's Shindig! booked them in May 1965, they made Howlin' Wolf's appearance a condition of their own and sat at his feet while he played, giving him his first performance on American national television.
