Yiddish-speaking songwriter and guitarist who recasts old songs in a blues-and-rock idiom — including ’s “Iber dem regnboygn.”
was born in 1947 at Saalfelden Farmach, a displaced-persons camp in Austria; his parents were Polish Jews who had survived the war in the Soviet Union. The family lived in Sweden and, from 1954, in Toronto. He later settled in Northampton, Massachusetts, and records on his own Kame’a Media label. Transmigrations / Gilgul (1996) put traditional Yiddish songs in a blues–rock–reggae band; Tzadik later issued Goyrl: Destiny (2002).
