What is mode?

A made by treating a different note of a parent scale as home. Play only the white keys but centre everything on D and you get Dorian — same notes, new , new mood.

A mode takes one parent scale and starts it from a different , so the same set of notes takes on a new home note and a new character. The major scale has seven modes — Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Locrian — each running from the next degree up. They share the same seven pitches; what changes is which note feels like 'home,' and that shift is enough to swing a scale from bright to dark.
