What is shuffle?
A swung feel where each beat is split into a long-then-short pair (like a triplet with its middle note dropped), giving blues and swing their loping, rolling groove.
In a shuffle, the steady beats stay put but each one is divided unevenly: instead of two equal eighth notes, you get a long note followed by a short one — the same as playing the first and third notes of a triplet. That lopsided subdivision is what makes a blues 'walk' or a swing band 'roll,' as opposed to the flat, even eighths of a straight rock or pop groove. Drop the swing and play even eighths with a hard beat on 2 and 4 and you have the that rock traded the shuffle for.
