The academy that comes after (חדר) , where older students study Talmud. The name still covers Jewish schools from the high-school years through advanced study.
A yeshiva is a Jewish academy for Talmud and the rabbinic tradition. The word is Hebrew ישיבה, “sitting,” the name of a study session. In Eastern Europe it was the school that followed cheder. The Lithuanian academies, Volozhin among them, put Talmud at the center of the day. (חסידיש) (חסידי) communities run yeshivas as well.
Today the name covers both the high-school years and advanced study, mainly in the United States and Israel. Students still learn nigunim (ניגון) and holiday songs there by singing them.
