Misirlou
Μισιρλού“‘Egyptian girl’”in English
Dick Dale · 1962
One melody, many lives
The surf-guitar instrumental that made the folk tune a Western hit — one string, much faster, later quoted over the opening of Pulp Fiction.
(born Richard Anthony Monsour) released “Miserlou (Μισιρλού)” as a Deltone single in April 1962. He had learned the melody from Lebanese uncles who played it on the oud, and he recast it as a high-speed one-string guitar instrumental. Quentin Tarantino put this record — not a new composition — over the opening of Pulp Fiction in 1994. The track is instrumental; there are no lyrics to source.
